Installation Notes - Onty EM browser for SNOMED and the CPT DTK

Prerequisites

The software is written in Java on the Eclipse Rich Client Platform. There are separate install packages for Windows and Mac OS. It has been tested on Windows XP (but not Vista) and Mac OS X 10.5. The software requires Java 1.5 or newer. On the Mac this means running at least Mac OS 10.4. If you encounter issues on Vista, please let us know.

The software requires approximately 25MB. The database for the CPT DTK data requires an additional 40MB. SNOMED requires 600MB.

Download and Extract

The Onty EM browser software is packaged as a zip file. For the rest of these notes we'll assume that you've downloaded and extracted the software into a folder named "ontyem" with a structure as shown below. You can structure the folders however you wish, but using this structure will make the installation a bit more straightforward. Note that there is a "data" folder and that we've also created a "db" folder to store the database files which will be created during the import process.

You will need to obtain the terminology source data files independently.
For SNOMED in the US see US National Library of Medicine UMLS
For CPT see AMA CPT Developer's Toolkit

Starting Onty EM

This is pretty easy, on Windows just navigate to the "ontyem-1.0.3" folder, and open the "ontyem.exe" application (either double-click or right-click then "open"). If you're running on Mac OS you will also find the "ontyem" application in the "ontyem-1.0.3" folder.

You will see the Onty EM splash screen and then a license agreement, which you should read and the press yes to indicate agreement. A "Welcome" screen will appear. Select "Start Onty EM" to begin.

Importing the Data Files

After the welcome page you will see the following screen where you will specify the connection and import the data files.

Right click on the page and select "Create new connection" from the popup. Alternatively you can press the "Create new connection" button on the toolbar.

The following dialog will appear where you will specify the connection.

Specify the connection as follows:

  • Press the "Browse" button to specify the folder to store the database. In our example we have used the "db" folder.
  • The "Create" box must be checked.
  • For the schema we we suggest using the source name followed by the version. So for CPT use "cpt2009", and for SNOMED use "snomed200901". This will create a folder with that name in the db folder.
  • For the connection name we again suggest using the source and version. Since you can have multiple connections use a connection name that which differentiates among them.
  • The connection type must be the correct one for the source, either "CptDtk" or "SNOMED".

Press next to specify the location of the data files. The labels will be different for CPT and SNOMED.

Here is a CPT import dialog:

Press the "Browse" button to specify the location of each of the data files. Be sure that they match up!

Press "Finish" and the import will start. This may take anywhere from ten seconds for CPT on a fast machine to over thirty minutes for SNOMED on a slower computer. During that time a progress dialog will be present. On successful completion it will dismiss and you will see a connection appear on the connection view as follows.

Right click on this connection and select "Open".

The following browser perspective will appear.

This connection view will now appear each time you start Onty EM. Open the connection to go to the browser.

Congratulations!
